"Education is not the answer to the question.  Education is the means to answer all of the questions."

Welcome to my home page for the 4th 9 weeks of the 2007-2008 school year!  This site is for parents and students alike to locate information about what is going on in my English III and English IV classes.  The quote above summarizes my view of education, which is basically that education is a tool that should equip students for doing whatever they choose in life.  As a secondary level English teacher, my goal, in my opinion, is to teach my students to not only learn writing, reading, and grammar skills, but to teach them to think about their world, and learn to properly communicate with the people around them.  Thinking is a skill that is in short demand in all facets of our world today, and therefore I think this is the most important skill a teacher can impart to a student.  I hope that through my class my students begin to think and question what is happening in their lives, communities, and world, and because of these questions, can become productive and strong members of our society.
That being said, I want this site to be a resource for students and parents to see what is happening in class.  I encourage parents to check this out and be aware of what we are studying, as well as encourage students to use the site to keep up with assignments and to use the links that I provide as resources for this class and other classes as well.  (I will also do better about updating it from now on....sorry about that!)

1.)  My English III classes will be spending the next few weeks reading Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible.  Our lessons will center on aspects of a play, as well as focusing on how hysteria and lack of common sense and knowledge can provoke all out panic.  Students will connect this play, not only with the Red Scare of the 1950's (Miller's original intent), but also with some of the common problems in today's society.
2.)  My English III Honors classes will be reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter.  This novel is filled with teachable moments and ideas.  We will, of course, discuss the concepts of a novel and how Hawthorne puts his together, but we will discuss some different themes as well.  We will talk about the role sin (visible and invisible) plays a role in the novel.  We will discuss the concept of forgiveness (internal and external) is important also. Students will finish this unit with a project (more on this later)
3.)  My English IV classes will be closing their year out discussing stories about immigrants and their impact on our country and culture.  We will discuss various immigrant tales and show how these people built our country.  This will also lead to discussion and research on our current views on immigration in the United States (hopefully encouraging these soon to be, or already able, voters to think about the situation, rather than blindly taking what is said around them).
